Especially for the Mom Entrepreneurs Who Are Ready to Scale
Most business owners think scaling is about money and marketing. They’re wrong. It’s about leadership. If you don’t shift from doer to leader, your business will never outgrow you.
Hi, I’m Angie, and today I’m breaking down six brutal truths about leadership that every entrepreneurโespecially us mom entrepreneursโneeds to hear. These aren’t feel-good platitudes; they’re hard-earned lessons that can make or break your business.
Truth #1: If You’re Still Doing Everything, You Don’t Own a BusinessโYou ARE the Business
Are you still the one answering every client email, taking every call, fixing every problem, and running every task? Then you don’t own a business; you are the business.
I learned this lesson the hard way when I launched Little Zi. I wanted to do everything myselfโclassic entrepreneur mistake. My mother specifically told me, “You’ve got to delegate certain things. You cannot do everything.” She was right, but I didn’t listen.
The hardest lesson I learned was losing clients because I decided to do everything myself. When you’re spread too thin, you can’t focus on any one thing properly, and you can’t grow. It’s literally impossible to scale when you’re trying to be everywhere at once.
The shift you need to make:ย Go from doer to leader. Create systems. Learn to delegate. It’s the only way to actually scale your business.
Truth #2: Self-Doubt Is Your Real Enemy
Most businesses don’t fail because of moneyโthey fail because the owner second-guesses themselves into paralysis. I’ve been there.
You think you need to be perfect. You think every aspect of your delivery needs to be flawless. But guess what? Perfection costs you time, and time costs you sales.
When you second-guess yourself to death, you create paralysis. Your business stays stuck. There’s no action, no movement, no money, no income.
The reality check:ย Clarity in action leads to confidence. You’ve got to move before you feel ready. It’s like having kidsโyou just do it and learn along the way. Experience and action beat second-guessing and paralysis every single time.
Truth #3: Every Day You Delay a Decision, You’re Still Paying for It
Indecision has a costโa big one. Leaders make decisions based on the best available information they have right now. If something changes later, they pivot and adapt.
Let me share a story from my JP Morgan days. We had a client who wanted to trade derivatives and interest rates. He didn’t like our pricing, so he waited and waited and waited. When he finally decided to move forward, he ended up paying significantly more than the original quote.
The advisor had told him, “This is a good opportunity right now. I wouldn’t wait if I were you.” But the client waited anyway, and it cost him.
The lesson:ย Sometimes indecision is the most expensive decision you’ll make. Make decisions with the information you have at hand, then adjust as needed.
Truth #4: Leadership Is All About Boundaries
The way you respect yourself teaches people how to respect you. Your business and your team will only respect you as much as you respect yourself and your own boundaries.
Don’t say yes to everythingโthat’s a huge mistake. You cannot be spread too thin because being spread too thin doesn’t allow you to grow or focus.
Focus on the 20%:ย Spend your energy on the 20% of tasks that only you can doโthe things that generate the most income and require your unique skills. Everything else? Delegate it. Automate it. Say no to it.
Protecting your time and maintaining focus is a huge leadership responsibility. You’re here to lead your team and scale your business to the next level. If you’re everywhere, you’re nowhere.
Truth #5: If You’re a Parent Building a Business, You Already Have the Leadership Skills
This one’s especially for my fellow mom entrepreneurs. If you’re building a business with kids at home, you already possess leadership skills that most CEOs dream of having.
Juggling kids, school, doctor’s appointments, sports, after-school events, plus running your business teaches you three key leadership skills:
Prioritizationย – You know how to focus on what matters most
Disciplineย – You get things done despite chaos
Adaptabilityย – You pivot when plans change (and they always do)
These are literally the required skills to be a great leader and grow your business. You already have them!
Mindset shift:ย Think of your daily chaos as a training ground, not a headache you must deal with. Changing your perspective changes how you see your business too.
Truth #6: Calling Yourself CEO Doesn’t Make You OneโYour Actions Do
How many people have you met who call themselves CEOs but it’s just an empty title? They have no vision, no directionโit’s like an empty promise.
A true CEO has a vision and is responsible with their time, focus, projects, tasks, team, and family. They drive results and grow their business because they’re actual leaders.
Remember:ย Leadership is earned through actions and execution, not through titles. You become a leader by leading, not by declaring yourself one.
The Bottom Line
Leadership isn’t about doing moreโit’s about shifting how you think, how you act, and how you guide others.
If you’re ready to step out of the weeds and into real leadership, it’s time to make these mindset shifts. Your business is waiting for you to lead it to the next level.
